Speaker:  Christine A. Norvell, PhD, (UCLA) is a mother, a teacher, a reading specialist, a principal, and now a consultant. Dr. Norvell taught in the inner city for 15 years and then became Principal of Pacific School, MBUSD, for 21 years. She is currently a consultant for View Park Charter Schools, part of ICEF, the Inner City Education Foundation.

Practical Discipline Strategies

for Young Children

Do you sometimes struggle with how to set limits on your child's behavior?

Parents often question how much or how little to “discipline” their children. Learn some effective skills to discipline, guide, and teach that promote positive behavior. The goal of positive discipline is to help children develop safe, socially responsible behavior that respects the feelings and property of others. “Time out” is out. Find some alternative strategies that will change the dynamics in your home. Practical ideas and approaches that work in the classroom and home settings will be shared.

Speaker: Michelle Moen, MA, (CSULB) teaches child development courses at El Camino Community College and the California State University colleges. She has over 20 years experience teaching young children, including parent education. She also keeps busy as a guest speaker, consultant, and professional storyteller.

How prepared are you for a 911?

An instructional overview of emergency skills including CPR for infants and children, choking interventions, and first aid response techniques for minor body injuries.  Please note that no certification exam will be administered.  Caregivers are welcome.

Speaker: Kelly Hendrickson, RN, (USC) a mother of two active boys has over 10 years experience as a health professional working in high risk obstetrics in acute care and as a patient educator. She was also an administrator in a non-profit pediatric medical clinic.
